2025 Hokkaido Summer Sale Preview

13 August, 2025

The Hokkaido Summer Sale has 1,462 yearlings catalogued for this year's edition, making it the largest sale of the year in Japan in terms of lots on offer. The six-day sale will commence on Monday, August 18th, and run through to August 23rd. Historically, the Summer Sale was a five-day event, but it was extended last year due to increasing demand from breeders to offer their yearlings. This format will continue this year. The previous record for the largest number of lots offered was set in 2023, with 1,368 yearlings catalogued.

A Group 1 winner and the 2021 Dubai World Cup runner-up, Chuwa Wizard (JPN), will offer his first crops. His 54 yearlings include Lot 764, a colt who is a half-brother to four-time JRA winner A Shin Deneb (JPN); Lot 978, a colt who is a half-brother to the unbeaten five-time winner Bear Bakkyun (JPN); and Lot 1210, a half-brother to G3 winner Trust (JPN).

One of the most expensive advertised sires, Kizuna (JPN), will offer a single filly at the sale. The sire is standing for ¥20,000,000 (US$133,333) and his progeny Lot 426 is out of G2 winner and G1-placed mare Aloha Star (IRE). Her first foal, a colt by Kingman (GB), was sold for ¥18,150,000 (US$121,000) at the 2024 Hokkaido Summer Sale.

Max Training Farm is offering 109 yearlings, making them the only consignor with more than 100 yearlings. Chestnut Farm follows with 97 yearlings on offer.

The highest clearance rate for the Hokkaido Summer Sale, 82.3%, was recorded last year. With the largest number of yearlings to be offered and the sale remaining in its six-day format, the 2025 Hokkaido Summer Sale will be held at the Hokkaido Sales Complex starting on August 18th.
