The 2025 Hokkaido Training Sale cataloged 103 juveniles and was held on Tuesday, May 20th at Sapporo Racecourse. As the second-smallest edition in the past decade, the sale grossed a total of ¥504,460,000 (US$3,603,286), with an average price of ¥7,418,529 (US$52,989) and a median of ¥5,335,000 (US$38,107). Compared to 2024, the median price dropped significantly by 15%, while the average saw a slight dip of 2.8%. However, the clearance rate rose to 72.3%, up 1.4 percentage points from last year.
The average price was notably influenced by the sale-topper, Lot 7, a colt by Contrail (JPN) out of Teorema (JPN). The colt was purchased by Life House Co., Ltd for ¥68,200,000 (US$487,143), setting a new record for the highest price ever at the Hokkaido Training Sale. Contrail, a first-season two-year-old sire, currently stands for ¥18,000,000 (US$128,571) at Shadai Stallion Station, with 130 foals registered in his first Japanese crop.
Life House also purchased the highest-priced filly of the sale, Lot 75, out of two-time JRA winner Oakville (JPN), a half-sister to Sunrise Vega (JPN), a G3 winner. Oakville is also a half-sister to the dam of another G3 winner, Sunrise Hope (JPN). Notably, Life House--run by Mr. Matsuoka's family--owned both Sunrise Vega and Sunrise Hope.
The reigning leading consignor, MAX Training Farm, sold eight horses for a total of ¥116,490,000 (US$832,071), successfully defending their title. Their total sales nearly doubled last year's results, largely contributed by the sale of Lot 7.
JRA two-year-old racing will kick off on June 7th, the weekend following the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby).
