The 2024 Hokkaido Summer Sale was extended this year due to increased demand from breeders to offer their yearlings. The six-day sale kicked off on Monday, August 19th at the Hokkaido Sales Complex.
Overall, 977 yearlings grossed a total of ¥7,134,600,000 (US$49,204,138) with an average of ¥7,302,558 (US$50,362) and a median of ¥5,720,000 (US$39,448). The average price was down 5.6% from a year ago and the median was slightly down by 1.9%. The clearance rate for the sale was 82.3%, which is the highest recorded in the Hokkaido Summer Sale's history.
The highest price of the sale was Lot 1154, a Henny Hughes (USA) filly out of Lady Madonna (JPN), which sold for ¥52,800,000 (US$364,138). Her dam was a two-time JRA winner whose first foal by Kizuna (JPN), Natural Rise (JPN), became a two-year-old debut winner within the JRA. Yoshimasa Ema purchased the filly from Grand Bokujo.
Chestnut Farm sold 58 yearlings for a total of ¥590,700,000 (US$4,073,793) and became the leading consignor of the 2024 Hokkaido Summer Sale. They sold two colts for over ¥30,000,000 (US$206,897). Lot 397, a Henny Hughes (USA) colt, sold for ¥35,200,000 (US$242,759) to become their top lot. The colt is out of two-time JRA winner Dancing Royal (JPN), who has produced four winners in the JRA. Lot 361, a Satono Crown (JPN) colt out of four-time JRA winner Cherir (JPN), made ¥34,100,000 (US$235,172). The colt is a half-brother to a Group 2 winner, Mousquetaire (JPN), and a Group 3 winner, Grandiose (JPN).
The Japan Racing Association (JRA) purchased 30 yearlings for a total of ¥241,230,000 (US$1,663,655) and was the leading buyer of the sale. Those yearlings purchased by the JRA go through the breaking and pre-training process at their own facilities and will subsequently be offered at the JRA Breeze-Up Sale in 2025.
Hokko Tarumae (JPN) claimed the leading sire of the sale after his 27 yearlings sold for a total of ¥311,740,000 (US$2,149,931). His top lot was Lot 981, a colt out of JRA winner Kinsho Otohime (JPN), which sold for ¥33,000,000 (US$227,586) to Champions Farm.
The biggest yearling sale in Japan has been completed and, with nine of the top 10 sires in the sale having either won a Group 1/Jpn1 or produced a Group 1/Jpn1 winner on the dirt surface, the demand from NAR owners at the Hokkaido Summer Sale remains high.
