2024 Hokkaido September Sale Preview

16 September, 2024

The Hokkaido September Sale has 575 yearlings catalogued for this year's edition. It is the second-largest number in the September Sale's history, which started in 2019. The three-day sale will commence on Tuesday, 17th September and run to 19th September. The final 42 lots at the end of this sale were either withdrawn or not sold at Hokkaido Sale's premier yearling offering, the Selection Sale, this July.

Two American-bred sires, California Chrome (USA) and Moanin (USA), have the largest portion of the catalogue with 17 yearlings each due to go under the hammer. A fellow countryman, Darley Japan's American Patriot (USA) has 16 yearlings.

Le Vent Se Leve (JPN) and Gold Dream (JPN) are both two-year-old first-season sires and they are responsible for 14 and 12 yearlings respectively.

Three sires are offering more than 10 of their first yearlings, the 2017 JRA Champion Two-Year-Old Colt Danon Premium (JPN), dual Group 1-winning sprinter Danon Smash (JPN), and dirt sprinter Matera Sky (USA).

The current most expensive sire in Japan is Kitasan Black (JPN) who is standing for ¥20,000,000 (US$ 142,857). He has three yearlings in the sale and two of them are out of black-type mares. Lot 156, a filly who is the first foal of a Group 3-placed mare Lune Rouge (JPN), and Lot 572, a colt out of a Group 1-placed Irish-bred Intikhab (USA) mare Lexlenos (IRE).

Four consignors are offering more than 20 yearlings at the September Sale. Chestnut Farm has the highest with 27 yearlings and Monbetsu Bokujo is next with 26 yearlings. A pre-training center, Hidaka Keishuba Ikusei Kousha, and a long-established Japanese breeder, Grand Bokujo, are both offering 22 yearlings.

Last year's Hokkaido September Sale average price was 13.6% up from the year before. The second largest catalogue of the September Sale will be held at the Hokkaido Sales Complex and opens for inspections from 17th September.
