2024 Hokkaido Summer Sale Preview

16 August, 2024

The Hokkaido Summer Sale has 1,265 yearlings catalogued for this year's edition, making it the biggest yearling sale in terms of lots on offer. The six-day sale will commence on Monday, August 19th through to August 24th. Historically, the Summer Sale was a five-day event. However, it has been extended this year due to increasing demand from breeders to offer their yearlings.

Five sires are responsible for 30 lots or more at the sale: American Patriot (USA), Best Warrior (USA), Gold Dream (JPN), Mischievous Alex (USA), and Moanin (USA). Darley Japan's American Patriot (USA) has the largest portion of the catalogue with 42 yearlings due to go under the hammer, including Lot 650, a filly out of a black-type winner, Harbin Mao (JPN). Her first foal, a filly named Z Regina (JPN) by New Year's Day (USA), was sold for ¥12,650,000 (US$84,333) at the 2022 Hokkaido Selection Sale. The now three-year-old has placed twice from her three starts in the JRA. Harbin Mao (JPN) also has unnamed two-year-old filly by Gold Ship (JPN) who was sold at last year's Hokkaido Selection Sale for ¥9,350,000 (US$62,333).

Moanin (USA) and Best Warrior (USA) are represented by respectively 34 and 33 yearlings. Gold Dream (JPN) has 31 yearlings and Mischevious Alex (USA) has 30 on offer. All four sires are Group 1 winners on dirt who commanded a nomination fee of ¥1,500,000 (US$10,000) or less when these yearlings were conceived.

Only one owner is offering more than 20 yearlings. Grand Bokujo has 21 yearlings including Lot 1145, a Kingman (GB) colt, who is the first foal out of the juvenile Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes winner, Aloha Star (IRE). His dam was also placed in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes as a juvenile. Aloha Star (IRE) was sold by Monceaux to Narvick International at the Arqana December in 2021 when she was a three-year-old.

Grand Bokujo is also offering Lot 1060, a filly and first foal out of the Deep Impact (JPN) mare, Paine (JPN). Her dam is a full-sister to the 2018 Japanese Derby winner, Wagnerian (JPN). The filly is the only youngster by Epiphaneia (JPN) in the sale, the sire is currently standing for ¥15,000,000 (US$100,000).

Max Training Farm consigned the highest and the second-highest lots at the last year's Hokkaido Summer Sale. The consigner is offering 75 yearlings which is approximately 5.9% of this year's sales catalogue.

Last year's Hokkaido Summer Sale set new records in most sale's metrics, lots offered and sold, clearance rate, sales gross, average, median price, and highest price. Although the number of yearlings offered will be smaller, extending the sale to six days will ensure ample time under the rostrum for each lot. The largest yearling sale in Japan will be held at the Hokkaido Sales Complex from August 19th.
