2024 Hokkaido Training Sale Preview

15 May, 2024

The catalogue of the 2024 Hokkaido Training Sale features 90 juveniles, the smallest number since 2001. The Hidaka Horse Breeders' Association has decided to conduct both the sale and the breeze on the same day due to the reduced number of catalogued lots. In advance of the sale on 21st May, the pre-breezes were held at BTC Urakawa and Hidaka Ikusei Kosha in early April.

At BTC Urakawa, a Dee Majesty(JPN) filly recorded the fastest furlong time of 10.8. Lot 65, the filly out of the three-time JRA winner, Northern Star(JPN). The granddaughter of Deep Impact(JPN) is an own sister to Shigeru Fanno Yume(JPN), a three-time JRA winning sprinter.

"She is a strong filly who has plenty of speed. Probably she is a 1200m to 1400m sprinter like her full sister. We expected one of the fastest times of the day, if not the fastest," the owner of her vendor, Hiroshi Ibi from Grande Farm, said.

He also mentioned that another filly, Lot 14 by Dunkirk(USA), recorded the second-fastest furlong time of 10.9.

"Our riders really liked her. She moves very well, and probably a longer distance would suit her. Unbridled's Song(USA) and Deep Impact(JPN) nicks are working well in Japan."

Three juveniles from the same vendor, N & star Training Centre, shared bullet furlong work times of 10.8 in the pre-breeze session at Hidaka Ikusei Kosha. Lot 4: an Asia Express(USA) filly out of Love Galaxy(JPN), Lot 12: Golden Mandela(GB) colt out of Western Birkin(JPN), and Lot 20: a New Year's Day(USA) colt out of a 4-time JRA winner, Western Rebecca(JPN).

"The Asia Express(USA) filly is very easy to ride and was on the bridle," a representative of the N & star Training Centre said.

"The Golden Mandela(GB) colt is very big at around 520kg. We sold his own brother, Yokkosan(JPN), at the Hokkaido Training Sale last year, and he became a JRA winner. This colt is better than Yokkosan(JPN) at the same stage," he said.

"Lot 20 is out of a 4-time JRA winner. He is a compact colt who will handle middle distances as his dam did."

"Lot 4, Love Galaxy filly(JPN), is the best. We didn't ask her too much on the pre-breeze day, and it could have been a couple of tenths faster than 10.8."

The sale gets underway at Sapporo Racecourse on Tuesday, 21st at 1:00 pm, following the Breeze-Up starting at 9:00 am.
