The Hokkaido September Sale was held at the Hokkaido Sales Pavilion in Shizunai, Hokkaido, between September 19th through September 21st. Over the three days, 402 yearlings were sold from 532 yearlings cataloged this year for a clearance rate of 75.6%. The gross ¥2,313,300,000(US$15,630,405) was a solid increase from last year. The average ¥5,754,477(US$38,881) and the median of ¥4,400,000(US$29,729) also were higher than last year.
The highest-priced colt was Hip 47 by Suave Richard(JPN), sold for ¥27,500,000(US$185,810) and bought by Capital System Co. Ltd. The highest price filly was Hip 75 by Real Steel(JPN) and was bought by Red Magic Co. Ltd. for ¥18,150,000(US$122,635). In total, three horses sold for over ¥20,000,000(US$135,135) while 16 sold for between ¥15,000,000(US$101,351) ~ ¥20,000,000(US$135,135) and 38 sold for between ¥10,000,000(US$67,567) ~ ¥15,000,000(US$101,351).
Sinister Minister(USA) led the sale with the highest gross for a single stallion. He sold all six of his yearlings for ¥81,400,000(US$550,000) with the highest going for ¥22,000,000(US$148,648) and averaged ¥13,566,666(US$91,666). The young stallion Four Wheel Drive(USA) sold all ten of his lots of his first crop, grossing ¥71,830,000(US$485,337), averaging ¥7,183,000(US$48,533). Gold Dream(JPN) sold eight of nine lots of his first crop for a gross of ¥69,850,000(US$471,959) and an average of ¥8,731,250(US$58,994). Shanghai Bobby(USA) has been a major hit with his debut crop last year and sold all eight of his lots for ¥63,690,000(US$430,337) and averaged ¥7,961,250(US$53,792). To round out the top five, Drefong(USA) sold five of his six-yearlings for a gross of ¥60,170,000(US$406,554) and an average of ¥12,034,000(US$81,310).
The market continues to hold strong in Japan, with the final yearling sale of the season coming in the middle of October. The 2023 Hokkaido Autumn Sale will be held on October 16th and 17th at the same Hokkaido Sales Pavilion in Shizunai, Hokkaido.
