The Hokkaido Autumn Sale was held at the Hokkaido Sales Pavilion in Shizunai, Hokkaido, on October 16th and 17th. During the two-day sale, where 435 yearlings were cataloged this year, 330 were sold for a clearance rate of 75.9%. The gross ¥1,312,410,000(US$8,808,120) was a solid increase from last year. The average ¥3,977,000(US$26,691) was up, but the median of ¥3,135,000(US$21,040) was down slightly from last year.
The highest-priced colt was Hip 343 by Pyro(USA), sold for ¥18,700,000(US$125,503) and bought by Toshiya Miyazaki. In a rare turn of events in Japan, the highest-price filly was also the sale topper. Yuki Kawano bought hip 193 by Suave Richard(JPN) for ¥19,800,000(US$132,885). In total, four yearlings sold for between ¥15,000,000(US$100,671) ~ ¥20,000,000(US$134,228) and eight sold for between ¥10,000,000(US$67,114) ~ ¥15,000,000(US$100,671), an increase from last year.
American Patriot(USA) was the highest grossing stallion of the sale, selling 17 of his 23 yearlings. He grossed ¥67,430,000(US$452,550) and averaged ¥3,966,470(US$26,620). Asia Express(USA) also sold well, with 10 of his 12 lots grossing ¥48,950,000(US$328,523) and averaging ¥4,895,000(US$32,852). Two sons of Deep Impact(JPN), G1 Japanese Derby winner Roger Barows(JPN), and G1 Yasuda Kinen winner Satono Aladdin(JPN) sold all of their lots at the sale. Roger Barows(JPN) grossed ¥37,180,000(US$249,530) and Satono Aladdin(JPN) grossed ¥35,860,000(US$240,671). They averaged ¥7,436,000(US$49,906) and ¥3,984,444(US$26,741) respectively. Two-time G1 Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow(IRE) sold nine of his twelve yearlings at the sale. He grossed ¥35,530,000(US$238,456) and averaged ¥3,947,777(US$26,495).
This was the final sale of the 2023 sales season for the Hokkaido Sales. 2023 proved to be another stellar year for the domestic Japanese market. High prices and high clearance rates show the equally high demand for the ever-improving Japanese-bred thoroughbred. We hope to see you all again next year.
