Hokkaido Summer Sale Review

The week-long Hokkaido Summer Sale continued to show the strength of Japan's domestic thoroughbred sales market. The renewal posted a record gross of ¥8,259,350,000(US$58,995,357) and a near-record clearance rate of 78.1%. The 1,068 yearlings purchased over the week sold for an average of ¥7,733,473(US$55,239) and a median of ¥5,830,000(US$41,642), both seeing increases from last year.

The sale topper was Hip 1084, a colt by Kitasan Black(JPN) that Tatsuya Akimoto bought for ¥59,400,000(US$424,285). Kitasan Black(JPN) has been having a stellar start to his career, especially with the massive success of Equinox(JPN), who is currently the World's Best Racehorse. 260 yearlings were sold for over ¥10,000,000 at the sale, a significant increase from last year.

The Hokkaido Summer Sale is one of the biggest sales for NAR owners looking for top dirt runners, which can be seen in nine of the top ten grossing stallions being dirt sires. Ten-time G1/JPN1 winner Hokko Tarumae(JPN) was the highest grossing stallion of the sale, grossing ¥417,780,000(US$2,984,142) and averaging ¥10,994,210(US$78,530). Four time G1 winner Le Vent Se Leve(JPN)'s first crop grossed ¥309,210,000(US$2,208,642) and averaged ¥9,974,516(US$71,246). The NAR's most promising young sire Moanin(USA) grossed ¥297,000,000(US$2,121,428) and averaged ¥6,600,000(US$47,142). Japan's best dirt stallion Sinister Minister(USA) grossed ¥269,390,000(US$1,924,214) and averaged ¥14,966,111(US$106,900). Five time G1/JPN1 winner Gold Dream(JPN) first crop grossed ¥251,680,000(US$1,797,714) and averaged ¥7,865,000(US$56,178).

The next sale on the calendar is the Hokkaido September Sale on September 19th through the 21st.
