May JRA Graded Stakes Review

In the 2200m G2 Kyoto Shimbun Hai at Kyoto Racecourse on May 6th, post-time favorite Satono Glanz(JPN) by Satono Diamond(JPN) sat mid-pack before working his way up to get his neck out there to win his first graded stakes title. Danon Tornado(JPN) by Heart's Cry(JPN) had to settle for second place. Libyan Glass(JPN) by Kizuna(JPN) was just a head back in third after setting the pace throughout.

In the 2000m G3 Niigata Daishoten at Niigata Racecourse on May 7th, seven-year-old Karate(JPN) by To the Glory(JPN) earned his third graded stakes win. Seiun Hades(JPN) by Silver State(JPN) was three-quarters of a length back in second. Explosion(JPN) by Orfevre(JPN) was eight lengths back in third.

In the 1600m G1 NHK Mile Cup at Tokyo Racecourse on May 7th, the ninth favorite Champagne Color(JPN) by Duramente(JPN) broke out from the pack to win his first G1 title. Umbrail(JPN) by Lord Kanaloa(JPN) was a head back in second. Obamburumai(JPN) by Discreet Cat(USA) was a length and a quarter back in third.

In the 1400m G2 Keio Hai Spring Cup at Tokyo Racecourse on May 13th, Red Mon Reve(JPN) by Lord Kanaloa(JPN) earned his first graded stakes win. Win Marvel(JPN) by I'll Have Another(USA) was half a length back in second. Daddy's Vivid(JPN) by Kizuna(JPN) was another neck back in third. The race's finish was exciting, with only a neck between each of the horses from 2nd place to 12th place.

In the 1600m G1 Victoria Mile at Tokyo Racecourse on May 14th, Songline(JPN) by Kizuna(JPN) made up for her lackluster run last year to beat out the fan and betting favorites to earn her second G1 title. All white Sodashi(JPN) by Kurofune(USA) was a head back in second. Post-time favorite Stars on Earth(JPN) by Duramente (JPN) was another three-quarters of a length back in third.

In the 1900m G3 Heian Stakes on dirt at Kyoto Racecourse on May 20th, favorite Gloria Mundi(JPN) by King Kamehameha(JPN) rewarded his backers when he, after expertly stalking the pace and running away from his competitors to earn his first graded stakes win after several listed victories. Hagino Alegrias(JPN) by Kizuna(JPN) was two and a half lengths back in second. Vanyar(JPN) by Turtle Bowl(IRE) was another length back in third.

In the 2400m G1 Japanese Oaks at Tokyo Racecourse on May 21st, the nearly odds on favorite Liberty Island(JPN) by Duramente(JPN) lived up to the hype when she demolished the field to win by an incredible six lengths. Harper(JPN) by Heart's Cry(JPN) had to settle for second place. Dura(JPN) by Duramente(JPN) was a neck back in third.

In the 1200m G3 Aoi Stakes at Kyoto Racecourse on May 27th, Mozu Meimei(JPN) by Real Impact(JPN) went wire to wire to earn her second graded stakes victory. Lugal(JPN) by Duramente(JPN) was half a length back in second. Big Caesar(JPN) by Big Arthur(JPN) was a neck back in third.

In the 2400m G1 Japanese Derby at Tokyo Racecourse on May 28th, Tastiera(JPN) by Satono Crown(JPN) posted a mild upset over favorite Sol Oriens(JPN) by Kitasan Black(JPN) to win one of the highest honors in Japanese racing. His sire, Satono Crown(JPN), was third in the Japanese Derby in 2015. Sol Oriens(JPN) was second by just a neck. Hearts Concerto(JPN) by Heart's Cry(JPN) was another nose back in third.

In the 2500m G2 Meguro Kinen at Tokyo Racecourse on May 28th, Heat on Beat(JPN) by King Kamehameha(JPN) earned his first graded stakes win. Diastima(JPN) by Deep Impact(JPN), who set the pace throughout, finished a head behind in the second. Saliera(JPN) by Deep Impact(JPN) was another three-quarters of a length back in third.
