April JRA Graded Stakes Review

In the 1600m G3 Lord Derby Challenge Trophy at Nakayama Racecourse on April 1st, third favorite Industria(JPN) by Leontes(JPN) sat mid-pack before getting up to win his first graded stakes race. Justin Cafe(JPN) by Epiphaneia(JPN) was three-quarters of a length back in second. Sonnig(JPN) by Lovely Day(JPN) was another half a length back in third.

In the 2000m G1 Osaka Hai at Hanshin Racecourse on April 2nd, the highly praised Jack d'Or (JPN) by Maurice(JPN) lived up to his potential and captured his first G1 victory. Dual Filly Classic heroine Stars on Earth(JPN) by Duramente(JPN) came from the back of the pack to miss out on adding another G1 to her resume by only a nose. Danon the Kid(JPN) by Just a Way(JPN) was another neck back in third.

The 1600m G2 New Zealand Trophy at Nakayama Racecourse on April 8th is a NHK Mile Cup trial race. Eeyan(JPN) by Silver State(JPN) stalked the pace before taking command and earning his first graded stakes win. Umbrail(JPN) by Lord Kanaloa(JPN) was a length and a quarter back in second. Champagne Color(JPN) by Duramente(JPN) was a further neck back in third.

In the 1600m G2 Hanshin Himba Stakes at Hanshin Racecourse on April 8th, Sound Vivace(JPN) by Duramente(JPN) posted a solid upset when she won by a length and a quarter after having closely stalked the pace. Sublime Anthem(JPN) by Lord Kanaloa(JPN) was back in second. Costa Bonita(JPN) by Isla Bonita(JPN) was just a neck back in third.

In the 1600m G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) at Hanshin Racecourse on April 9th, last year's champion two-year-old filly Liberty Island(JPN) by Duramente(JPN) came from nearly last to first in the stretch to win brilliantly. Kona Coast(JPN) by Kitasan Black(JPN) was three-quarters of a length back in second. Perifania(JPN) by Maurice(JPN) was a neck back in third.

The 1600m G3 Arlington Cup at Hanshin Racecourse on April 15th is a NHK Mile Cup trial race. The fifth favorite Obamburumai(JPN) by Discreet Cat(USA) posted a mild upset while claiming his second graded stakes win. Session(JPN) by Silver State(JPN) was a head back in second. Shomon(JPN) by Mind Your Biscuits(USA) was a further neck back in third.

In the 2000m G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) at Nakayma Racecourse on April 16th, second favorite Sol Oriens(JPN) by Kitasan Black(JPN) shined bright while claiming the first leg of the Japanese Triple Crown. Tastiera(JPN) by Satono Crown(JPN) was a length and a quarter back in second. Post-time favorite Phantom Thief(JPN) by Harbinger(GB) was a further length and three-quarters back in third.

In the 1800m G3 Antares Stakes on dirt at Hanshin Racecourse on April 16th, favorite Promised Warrior(JPN) by Majestic Warrior(USA) went wire to wire to earn his second graded stakes victory. Vanyar(JPN) by Turtle Bowl(IRE) was half a length back in second. King's Sword(JPN) by Sinister Minister(USA) was a further two lengths back in third.

In the 1800m G3 Fukushima Himba Stakes at Fukushima Racecourse on April 22nd, Stellaria(JPN) by Kizuna (JPN) posted a significant upset, earning her first graded stakes win. Big Ribbon(JPN) by Rulership(JPN) was a nose back in second. Kurino Premium(JPN) by Orfevre(JPN) was a head back in third.

The 2000m G2 Flora Stakes at Tokyo Racecourse on April 23rd is a Japanese Oaks trial race. Seventh favorite Golden Hind(JPN) by Gold Ship(JPN) upset the young field to claim her first graded stakes title. So Dazzling(JPN) by Heart's Cry(JPN) was a length and a quarter back in second. Bright Jewelry(JPN) by Epiphaneia(JPN) was a length and quarter back in third.

In the 1600m G2 Milers Cup at Kyoto Racecourse on April 23rd, G1 winner Schnell Meister(GER) by Kingman(GB) finally returned to the winners' circle with a thrilling performance. Gaia Force(JPN) by Kitasan Black(JPN) was a neck back in second. Soul Rush(JPN) by Rulership(JPN) was another neck back in third.

The 2400m G2 Aoba Sho at Tokyo Racecourse on April 29th is a Japanese Derby trial race. Favorite Skilfing(JPN) by Kitasan Black(JPN) rewarded his backer's support when he expertly earned his way into the G1 Japanese Derby. Hearts Concerto(JPN) by Heart's Cry(JPN) was half a length back in second. Timur(JPN) by Kizuna(JPN) was two lengths back in third.

In the 3200m G1 Tenno Sho Spring at Kyoto Racecourse on April 30th, Justin Palace(JPN) by Deep Impact(JPN), who until now had been known more for being the half-brother of G1 winner Palace Malice(USA), earned his own place in racing history with his first G1 score by two and a half lengths. Deep Bond(JPN) by Kizuna(JPN) finished second in his third attempt at this race. Silver Sonic(JPN) by Orfevre(JPN), who tossed his rider in this same race a year ago, finished admirably, this time a further length back in third.
