February JRA Graded Stakes Review

In the 1600m G3 Tokyo Shimbun Hai at Tokyo Racecourse on February 5th, Win Carnelian(JPN) by Screen Hero(JPN) went wire to wire to earn his second graded stakes victory. Namur(JPN) by Harbinger(GB) stalked the pace and had to settle for second by a head. Presage Lift(JPN) by Harbinger(GB) was mid-pack for most of the race and went up to finish third by a neck.

In the 2000m, G3 Kisaragi Sho at Chukyo Racecourse on February 5th, favorite Hrimfaxi(JPN) by Rulership(JPN) stalked the pace throughout and earned his first graded stakes win. Open Fire(JPN) by Deep Impact(JPN) worked his way up to finish second by a head. Cours Mirabeau(JPN) by Drefong(USA) was another three lengths back in third.

In the 1600m G3 Queen Cup at Tokyo Racecourse on February 11th, Harper(JPN) by Heart's Cry(JPN) posted a minor upset when she got up to win her first graded stakes race as the sixth favorite. The second favorite, Doe Eyes(JPN) by Rulership(JPN), hung on for second by a neck. Moryana(JPN) by Epiphaneia(JPN) was a nose more back in third.

In the 1800m G3 Kyodo News Hai at Tokyo Racecourse on February 12th, Phantom Thief(JPN) by Harbinger(GB) earned his first graded stakes victory of his career in a strong performance. Touch Wood(JPN) by Duramente(JPN) was a length and a quarter back in second. Danon the Tiger(JPN) by Heart's Cry (JPN), the post-time favorite, was a further neck back in third.

In the 2200m G2 Kyoto Kinen at Hanshin Racecourse on February 12th, last year's Derby hero Do Deuce(JPN) by Heart's Cry (JPN) came back with a dominating performance, coming from the back of the pack to win by three and a half lengths. Matenro Leo(JPN), also by Heart's Cry(JPN), was got up for second place. Pradaria(JPN) by Deep Impact(JPN) was a neck back in third.

In the 3400m G3 Diamond Stakes at Tokyo Racecourse on February 18th, Mixology(JPN) by Orfevre(JPN) came swooping down the stretch to get his neck in front and earn his first graded stakes title. Humidor(JPN), also by Orfevre(JPN), had to settle for second. Favorite Cils Blancs(JPN) by Tosen Jordan(JPN) was two lengths back in third.

In the 1400m G3 Kyoto Himba Stakes at Hanshin Racecourse on February 18th, second favorite La La Christine(JPN) by Mikki Isle(JPN) nosed out post-time favorite Win Charlotte(JPN) by Screen Hero(JPN). Win Charolette(JPN) had been leading the way since the start but had to settle for second in the final strides. Lotus Land(USA) by Point of Entry(USA) was a length and a quarter back in third.

In the 1600m G1 February Stakes on dirt at Tokyo Racecourse on February 19th, Lemon Pop(USA) by Lemon Drop Kid(USA) sat off the pace before making his move to earn his first G1 victory of his career by a comfortable length and a half. Red le Zele(JPN) by Lord Kanaloa(JPN) closed fast after missing the break but had to settle for second. Meisho Hario(JPN) by Pyro(USA) closed from the back of the pack, likely needing a longer distance to finish two and a half lengths further back in third.

In the 1800m G3 Kokura Daishoten at Kokura Racecourse on February 19th, the second favorite Hindu Times(JPN) by Harbinger(GB) earned his first graded stakes win after many years of hitting the board. Catedral(JPN) by Heart's Cry(JPN) was a nose back in second. Baji O(JPN) by Rulership(JPN) was half a length back in third.

In the 1800m G2 Nakayama Kinen at Nakayama Racecourse on February 26th, Hishi Iguazu(JPN) by Heart's Cry(JPN) came from mid-pack to claim his second renewal of the race. Lagulf(JPN) by Maurice(JPN) was three-quarters of a length back in second. Dobune(JPN) by Deep Impact(JPN) was a neck back in third.

In the 1400m G3 Hankyu Hai at Hanshin Racecourse on February 26th, second favorite Aguri(JPN) by Caravaggio(USA) earned his first graded stakes win. This was also Caravaggio(USA)'s first Japanese graded stakes success as he is standing his first season at stud in Japan this spring. Daddy's Vivid(JPN) by Kizuna(JPN) was a neck back in second. Ho O Amazon(JPN) by King Kamehameha(JPN) was another two and a half lengths back in third.
