2022 October JRA Graded Stakes Review

In the 1900m, G3 Sirius Stakes on dirt at Chuyo Racecourse on October 1st, Jun Light Bolt(JPN) by King Kamehameha(JPN) took off in the stretch to win his first graded stakes title. Hapi(JPN) by Kizuna(JPN) was three-quarters of a length back in second. Auvergne(JPN) by Smart Falcon(JPN) was a length and three quarters back in third.

In the 1200m, G1 Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama Racecourse on October 2nd, Gendarme(USA) by Kitten's Joy(USA) held on to win his first G1 title by a neck, posting a sizable upset. Win Marvel(JPN) by I'll Have Another(USA) was a fast closing second. Naran Huleg(JPN) by Gold Allure(JPN) was three-quarters of a length back in third.

In the 1600m G3 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup at Nakayama Racecourse on October 8th, second favorite Dolce More(JPN) by Rulership(JPN) stalked the pacesetter before launching a powerful closing drive to win his first graded stakes race by a length and a quarter. Granite(JPN) by Danon Ballade(JPN) held on after setting the pace to come in second. Silver Duke(JPN) by Silver State(JPN) was a further two and a half lengths back in third.

In the 1800m G2 Mainichi Okan at Tokyo Racecourse on October 9th, Salios(JPN) by Heart's Cry(JPN) finally made his way back to the winners' circle after two long years, setting a record time in the process. Justin Cafe(JPN) by Epiphaneia(JPN) was half a length back in second. Danon the Kid(JPN) by Just a Way(JPN) was another three-quarters of a length back in third.

In the 2400m G2 Kyoto Daishoten at Hanshin Racecourse on October 10th, Vela Azul(JPN) by Eishin Flash(JPN) bolted past the favorite in the final furlong earning his first graded stakes title. Favorite Boccherini(JPN) by King Kamehameha(JPN) was two and a half lengths back in second. Win Mighty(JPN) by Gold Ship(JPN) was another length and a quarter back in third.

In the 1800m G2 Fuchu Himba Stakes at Tokyo Racecourse on October 15th, twelfth betting favorite Izu Jo no Kiseki(JPN) by Epiphaneia(JPN) posted a significant upset to capture her first graded stakes race by a head. The upset was all the more massive as she came from the back of the pack to beat fan favorite and betting favorite Sodashi(JPN) by Kurofune(USA), the brilliant all-white G1 winning filly. Andvaranaut(JPN) by King Kamehameha(JPN) was three-quarters of a length back in third.

The 2000m G1 Shuka Sho at Hanshin Racecourse on October 16th was looking like it was set up to be another memorable Triple Crown-winning moment for the JRA. However, third favorite, Stunning Rose(JPN) by King Kamehameha(JPN), stunned the crowned by taking the final leg of the filly triple crown for herself. Namur(JPN) by Harbinger(GB) was half a length back in second. Stars on Earth(JPN) by Duramente(JPN), hoping to become the next triple crown winner, got pinched back at the break and ended up having a lot more to overcome to get to the finish line. She weaved through the field in the stretch to save ground but got stuck in traffic until it was too late. She finished a nose back in third.

In the 1600m G2 Fuji Stakes at Tokyo Racecourse on October 22nd, Serifos(JPN) by Daiwa Major(JPN) came from behind to earn his third graded stakes title by a neck. Soul Rush(JPN) by Rulership(JPN) was second. Danon Scorpion(JPN) by Lord Kanaloa(JPN) was another neck back in third.

The 3000m G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger) at Hanshin Racecourse on October 23rd was the final leg of the Japanese Triple Crown; however, there was no crown on the line this year. Ask Victor More(JPN) by Deep Impact(JPN) sat patiently in second position as the test of stamina unfolded before taking the lead at the 600m mark and was able to hold on by a nose to win his first G1 title. Boldog Hos(JPN) by Screen Hero(JPN) was flying down the stretch trying to snag the win in the final strides but had to settle for second. Justin Palace(JPN) by Deep Impact(JPN) was a half a length back in second.

In the 1600m G3 Artemis Stakes at Tokyo Racecourse on October 29th third favorite Ravel(JPN) by Kitasan Black(JPN) outdueled favorite Liberty Island(JPN) by Duramente(JPN) to win by a neck her first graded stakes title. Alice Verite(JPN) by Kizuna(JPN) was another neck back in third.

In the 1400m G2 Swan Stakes at Hanshin Racecourse on October 29th, Diatonic(JPN) by Lord Kanaloa(JPN) stalked the pace before dashing to the lead to win by a length. La La Christine(JPN) by Mikki Isle(JPN) was second, and Le Plus Fort(JPN) by Lord Kanaloa(JPN) was a head back in third.

The 2000m G1 Tenno Sho Autumn at Tokyo Racecourse on October 30th has long been one of the three most prestigious races on the JRA fall calendar as the premiere 10-furlong race. Favorite Equinox(JPN) by Kitasan Black(JPN) made up for his runner-up finishes in the G1 Satsuki Sho and the G1 Japanese Derby this spring by taking on his elders and winning by a solid length. Panthalassa(JPN) by Lord Kanaloa(JPN) was second after setting the pace. Danon Beluga(JPN) by Heart's Cry(JPN) was a neck back in third.
