May JRA Graded Stakes Review

In the 3200m G1 Tenno Sho Spring at Hanshin Racecourse on May 1st, Titleholder(JPN) by Duramente(JPN) destroyed the competition winning by a shocking seven lengths after leading the entire way around. Last year's runner-up Deep Bond(JPN) by Kizuna(JPN), was again second and T O Royal(JPN) by Leontes(JPN) was a length back in third.

In the 2200m G2 Kyoto Shimbun Hai at Chukyo Racecourse on May 7th, Ask Wild More(JPN) by Kizuna(JPN) sat mid-pack before posting a mild upset to earn his first graded stakes win. Verona City(JPN) by Epiphaneia(JPN) was half a length back in second, and Boldog Hos(JPN) by Screen Hero(JPN) was a length and a quarter back in third.

In the 2000m G3 Niigata Daishoten at Niigata Racecourse on May 8th, Red Galant(JPN) by Lord Kanaloa(JPN) posted a mild upset when he sat off the pace and held on to win by a neck, earning his second graded stakes win of the year. Kaiser Barows(JPN) by Deep Impact(JPN) was a neck back in second, and Yashamaru(JPN) by Kizuna(JPN) was a nose back in third.

In the 1600m, G1 NHK Mile Cup at Tokyo Racecourse on May 8th, Danon Scorpion(JPN) by Lord Kanaloa(JPN) kept his neck in front to claim his first G1 title. Matenro Orion(JPN) by Daiwa Major(JPN) was second, and Kawakita Reverie(JPN) by Drefong(USA) was another neck back in third.

In the 1400m G2 Keio Hai Spring Cup at Tokyo Racecourse on May 14th, the notoriously wild Meikei Yell(JPN) by Mikki Isle(JPN) earned her fifth graded stakes win. Sky Groove(JPN) by Epiphaneia(JPN) was second by half a length, and Time to Heaven(JPN) by Lord Kanaloa(JPN) was a further three quarters back in third.

In the 1600m G1 Victoria Mile at Tokyo Racecourse on May 15th, the all-white sensation Sodashi(JPN) by Kurofune(USA) posted a spectacular performance, earning her third G1 title. Fine Rouge(JPN) by Kizuna(JPN) was two lengths back in second, and Resistencia(JPN) by Daiwa Major(JPN) was a neck back in third.

In the 1900m, Heian Stakes at Chukyo Racecourse on May 21st, T O Keynes(JPN) by Sinister Minister(USA) was back to his winning ways after a disappointing international debut in the Saudi Cup back in February. Keiai Purple(JPN) by Pyro(USA) was two and a half lengths back in second, and Meisho Hario(JPN) by Pyro(USA) was another two and a half lengths back in third.

In the 2400m G1 Japanese Oaks at Tokyo Racecourse on May 22nd, Stars on Earth(JPN) by Duramente(JPN) proved that her G1 Oka Sho win last month was not a fluke when she delivered a perfect performance to keep her Filly Triple Crown hopes alive. Stunning Rose(JPN) by King Kamehameha(JPN) was a length and a quarter back in second, and Namur(JPN) by Harbinger(GB) was another length and a quarter back in third.

In the 1200m G3 Aoi Stakes at Chukyo Racecourse on May 28th, Win Marvel(JPN) by I'll Have Another(USA) sat mid-pack before storming home to win his first graded stakes by an easy two and a half lengths. Comstock Lode(JPN) by Silver State(JPN) was second, and Breathlessly(JPN) by American Patriot(USA) was a nose back in third.

In the 2500m G2 Meguro Kinen at Tokyo Racecourse on May 29th, Boccherini(JPN) by King Kamehameha(JPN) captured his second graded stakes win of his career. In a photo for second, Meiner Virtus(JPN) by Screen Hero(JPN) had his nose in front of Win Kiitos(JPN) by Gold Ship(JPN), who had to settle for third.

In the 2400m, G1 Japanese Derby at Tokyo Racecourse on May 29th, 2021, Two-year-old Champion Do Deuce(JPN) by Heart's Cry(JPN) smashed the race record. He became the first G1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes winner since Narita Brian(JPN) by Brian's Time(USA) in 1994 to win the Derby. Equinox(JPN) by Kitasan Black(JPN), who was slow away, made up a lot of ground to finish second by a neck. Ask Victor More(JPN) by Deep Impact(JPN) was two lengths back in third.
