The 2022 Hokkaido Selection Sale continued its upward trajectory for the fourth year in a row, defying a stagnant economy due to the after-effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each year going into the sales season, there is a worry that the thoroughbred market might be affected by troubles all around the globe, but to date, nothing seems to be able to change the domestic hunger for top thoroughbred stock.
The sale broke its gross record for the third consecutive year, bringing in ¥5,338,300,000(US$40,137,594) with a record clearance rate of 87.4%, with 263 lots sold from 301 cataloged. The average over the two-day sale was ¥20,297,718(US$152,614), a record for this sale, and the median was ¥15,400,000(US$115,789), slightly down from the past two years.
The sale topper was Hip 204, a colt by Bricks and Mortar(USA) out of G1 Oka Sho winner Reine Minoru(JPN), that sold to Minoru Yoshioka for ¥72,600,000(US$545,864). Hip 125, a colt by Sinister Minister(USA), was bought by Tetsuji Yamamoto for ¥68,200,000(US$512,782). Hip 246, a colt by Silver State(JPN), was also sold for ¥68,200,000(US$512,782) and was bought by Masahiro Miki. The highest priced filly was Hip 197, by Lord Kanaloa(JPN), purchased by Cho Gesho for ¥52,800,000(396,992).
Drefong(USA) was the highest grossing sire at the sale selling all 17 lots offered for a total of ¥363,550,000(US$2,733,459) with an average of ¥21,385,294(US$160,792), and his highest lot, Hip 32 selling for ¥50,600,000(US$380,451) to Masaaki Kumeta. Bricks and Mortar(USA) had the highest lot of the sale, and he grossed ¥210,100,000(US$1,579,699), having sold all six of his offered lots for an average of ¥35,016,666(US$263,283). Lord Kanaloa(JPN) had the highest average of the sale, ¥42,900,000(US$322,556), sold both lots that were offered, and grossed ¥85,800,000(US$645,113).
