Summer Premium Sale Preview

31 July, 2018

A new addition to Hokkaido Sale's yearly calendar, the Summer Premium Sale looks to bring the quality buyers have come to expect from July's Selection Sale and extend it into late August. After such a strong Selection Sale session, hopes are high that the Summer Premium Sale will bring the same boost to the local Hidaka sales market a month and a half later. Overall 392 carefully selected yearlings were picked out and divided between the two elite sales.

There are 194 yearlings in this year's Summer Premium Sale with 139 colts and 55 fillies. A few of the headlining lots in the sale are Hip 141 a Gold Allure(JPN) filly out of 13 time NAR winner A Shin Velocity(USA) and is a half-sister to Meisho Tekkon(JPN), a 2016 Selection Sale graduate, who won the G3 Radio Nikkei Sho on July 1st this year. Hip 64 a Henny Hughes(USA) colt out of Dashing Honey(JPN) is a half-brother to four-time NAR champion Love Michan(JPN), a 2008 Summer Sale graduate. Hip 144 is a Sinister Minister(USA) colt out of Primo Time(JPN) is a half-brother to 2017 NAR Horse of the Year, and winner of the 2017 JPNI Japan Dirt Derby Higashi Will Win(JPN), a 2015 Summer Sale graduate. Hip 85 a Gold Allure(JPN) colt out of Taiki Avenue(JPN) is a half-brother to 2017 NAR Champion Two-Year-Old Haseno Pyro(JPN) who has since gone on to win the NAR's, Tokyo Derby.

A Lord Kanaloa(JPN) colt topped the Selection Sale, and he had the highest priced filly as well. The Summer Premium also brings with it a robust selection of Lord Kanaloa(JPN) sired yearlings, including two colts and three fillies. The sale starts off with a bang with Hip 1, a colt out of Queen Olive(JPN), a Manhattan Cafe(JPN) mare who was a four-time winner in the JRA and this is her second foal. The next Lord Kanaloa(JPN) colt also goes through the ring early in the sale, Hip 17 out of Purple Stock(JPN), a French Deputy(USA) mare who was a three-time winner in the JRA and of her four offspring to race all have been winners. So far Lord Kanaloa(JPN)'s most significant results as a sire has been with his filly Almond Eye(JPN) who won the first two legs of the Filly Triple Crown this spring and will be aiming for the third jewel in October. Her performances have made her sire's fillies popular at auction this season, and in this one day sale, there will be three to choose from. Hip 56 is out of A Shin Madam G(USA), a Giant's Causeway(USA) mare who was a three-time winner in the JRA and this filly is her third live foal. Hip 155 out of Across the Light(JPN) a Neo Universe(JPN) mare and JRA winner sold a full sister in last year's Selection Sale where she sold for ¥14,040,000(US$128,160). The final Lord Kanaloa(JPN) filly is near the end of the sale; Hip 190 out of Sinister Queen(JPN) a Sinister Minister(USA) mare and three-time winner in the JRA.

Three stallions have a large selection in this sale, each reaching ten lots or more. 2014 G1 Japanese Derby winner Kizuna(JPN)'s first crop is well represented in this sale with a total of ten yearlings. Henny Hughes(USA) was runner-up in last year's Leading Freshman Sire rankings so as is usually with successful new sires his offspring have been drawing a lot of attention and he continues to get a full book of mares so in this year's sale there are twelve lots to represent his third crop. Rulership(JPN) has been a popular sire at the sales since his first crop became available. He was 2016 Leading Freshman Sire and was twelfth last year on the general JRA Leading Sire Rankings. As of July, he current sits sevenths on that same chart so it should be no surprise to see twelve of his offspring make it into the Summer Premium Sale.

The first crops of 2014 Japan Cup winner Epiphaneia(JPN) (nine lots) and US import Majestic Warrior(USA) (seven lots) have both been popular at previous yearling sales this year. Reliable favorites like South Vigorous(USA) (eight lots), Pyro(USA) (eight lots), and Kurofune(USA) (seven lots) will also be available. Current Leading Freshman Sire Just a Way(JPN) has six lots in the sale. If the catalog is any indication, the 2018 Summer Premium Sale will be a great addition to the 2018 sales calendar.

Please note that after the Summer Premium Sale there will be the usual Summer Sale from August 21st through August 24th, with an additional 1314 yearlings cataloged.
