2018 Hokkaido Selection Sale Preview

As the summer sales season approaches the Hidaka region's first yearling sale is just on the horizon, the 2018 Hokkaido Selection Sale. With 198 yearlings cataloged, 149 colts and 49 fillies, this year's renewal looks to contain a strong group of thoroughbreds for buyers to consider.

Many of Japan's best domestic sire lines are present in this year's sale that take up most of the top fifteen spots on the JRA leading sire ranking from 2017. There are two hips from both King Kamehameha(JPN) and Heart's Cry(JPN), while Daiwa Major(JPN) has five lots. Harbinger(GB) who had three G1 winners last year has three lots and Kurofune(USA) who had one G1 winner last year has six lots in the sale. Admire Moon(JPN), Black Tide(JPN), and Rulership(JPN) all had G1 winners last year and has two, four, and thirteen lots in the sale respectively.

Several sires that proved to be passing on the right genes with their two-year-olds last year are also well represented in the sale. Orfevre(JPN), who sired 2017 Champion Two-Year-Old Lucky Lilac(JPN), has five lots, while solid performers Eishin Flash(JPN) and Henny Hughes(USA) have five and ten lots in the sale. One of the most popular stallions to rise from last year's first crop stallions was Leading Freshman Sire Lord Kanaloa(JPN). His first crop has gone on rack up a fair amount of wins, including the G1 Oka Sho(Japanese 1000 Gunieas) and G1 Japanese Oaks with his phenomenal filly Almond Eye(JPN). Lord Kanaloa(JPN) has seven lots in the sale, two colts, and five fillies.

Two-year-old races have only been going for less than a month in Japan, but it will have an impact on the yearling sales this year. The undeniable star so far is Just a Way(JPN) who had A Will a Way(JPN) win her debut in stylish fashion on June 9th. He has nine lots in the sale. There are several other stallions with promise coming through the pipes though, including Cape Blanco(IRE), Grand Prix Boss(JPN), Dunkirk(USA), Belshazzar(JPN), and Tosen Jordan(JPN), with four, two, four, three, and one lots in the sale.

There are plenty of interesting first crop sires represented this year's sale. Two with the most extensive selection are 2014 G1 Japan Cup winner Epiphaneia(JPN) and 2013 G1 Japanese Derby winner Kizuna(JPN) both have thirteen lots. Eskendereya(USA), a promising son of the late Giant's Causeway(USA), has nine lots in the sale. A top miler by Daiwa Major(JPN), Curren Black Hill(JPN) has only one lot in the sale. There are two sons of the late Stay Gold(JPN), both displaying his fantastic stamina, six-time G1 winner Gold Ship(JPN) has two lots in the sale, and two time G1 Tenno Sho Spring winner Fenomeno(JPN) has seven lots.

Some of the highlighted pedigrees in this year's Selection sale are the inclusion of two half-siblings to G1 winners. Hip 93 is a half-sister to G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen winner Seiun Kosei(JPN) by record-setting World Ace(JPN) who is a son of Deep Impact(JPN). Hip 171 is a half-brother to nine time G1 winner and champion dirt horse Espoir City(JPN) by 2011 Dubai World Cup champion Victoire Pisa(JPN).

There are plenty of notable pedigrees in the sale including Apollo Tiara(JPN), the dam of Hip 30 a colt by Lord Kanaloa(JPN), won the 2006 G3 Fairy Stakes and Aim at Vip(JPN), dam of Hip 116 a Just a Way(JPN) colt, was third in the 2007 G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies. There are several proven producers in the sale as well. Fairy Ballade(IRE), dam of Hip 3 a colt by Spielberg(JPN), has produced two solid racehorses in Grazia(JPN) and Super Moon(JPN), both who placed in numerous graded races in Japan. Precious Lover(JPN), dam of Hip 26 a Novellist(IRE) colt, produced G3 winner Narita Crystal(JPN). Christian Pearl(JPN), dam of Hip 119 a Kinshasa no Kiseki(AUS) colt, produced Rose Princedom(JPN) who won the G3 Leopard Stakes last year.

There is plenty of black type in the deeper degrees in this sale, like Hip 101 a filly by Epiphaneia(JPN), is out of A Tes Souhaits(JPN) who is a full sister to Trend Hunter(JPN), who won the G3 Flower Cup and was third in the G1 Oka Sho(Japanese 1000 Guineas). Cereza(JPN) is a full sister to the dam of Hakusan Moon(JPN), one of Admire Moon(JPN)'s early successes, as well as the dam of Warring States(JPN) a G3 winner in Germany. Hip 179, out of Cereza(JPN) is a colt by Admire Moon(JPN), and this would be her fourth foal. Blazing(JPN), dam of Hip 197 a Kinshasa no Kiseki(JPN) colt, is a half-sister to G1 Dubai World Cup winner African Story(GB).

Hip 1 a Kinshasa no Kiseki(AUS) colt out of Daiwa Sun Rouge(JPN) who is a half-sister to Daiwa Passion(JPN), the dam of 2018 G1 Satsuki Sho(Japanese 2000 Guineas) winner Epoca d'Oro(JPN). The dam of Hip 8, a colt by Daiwa Major(JPN), is a half-sister to the dam of two time G1 winner Major Emblem(JPN) who herself was by Daiwa Major(JPN). The dam on Hip 28 an Epiphaneia(JPN) filly, Strong Leda(JPN), produced the 2016 G2 New Zealand Trophy winner Dantsu Prius(JPN). Admire Fine(JPN), dam of Hip 42, is a half-sister to the dam of 2017 Leading Freshman Sire Lord Kanaloa(JPN).

Aside from the half-sister to 2017 G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen winner Seiun Kosei(JPN)(Hip 93), who won the G3 Hakodate Sprint Stakes on June 17th, there are who hips out of half-sisters to the sprinter in the sale as well; Hip 12 a colt by Black Tide(JPN) and Hip 118 a Epiphaneia (JPN) colt.

With such a variety in bloodlines available, the 2018 Selection Sale should be a popular event for anyone looking for a quality Japanese bred racehorse.
