- Freshman Sire Rankings Top 5
Each year comes a new crop of young stallions looking to make their mark on the racing scene in Japan. In 2010 Deep Impact topped this list with 34 winners and has been Japan's top stallion for years. Until Lord Kanaloa(JPN) managed to get 30 individual winners this year, Deep Impact(JPN) was the only stallion to break the 30 winners mark in over two decades. Even Sunday Silence(USA) only had 20 winners in his first crop. While Lord Kanaloa(JPN) didn't have a graded stakes winner like Deep Impact(JPN) did from his first two-year-old crop his start is none the less impressive. He had 30 winners from 86 runners winning a total of 37 races and earning ¥428,671,000(US$3,827,419). His best runner was Stelvio(JPN) who ran second in both the G3 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup and the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes. Coming in second was Henny Hughes(USA) who was imported after six seasons in the United States. He has already proven himself a successful sire in Japan with two G1 winners and a couple of other graded stakes winners. His first Japanese bred crop featured 21 winners from 77 runners winning 24 races and earning ¥264,585,000(US$2,362,366). His best runner was Don Fortis(JPN) who ran second in the JPN1 Zen Nihon Nisai Yushun, which earned him points towards the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby. Third on the list was Orfevre(JPN) who wasn't featured much this summer as the two-year-old races began but in the end he had the flashiest finish. He had seven winners from 84 runners who won 10 races and earned ¥254,317,000(US$2,270,687). He had two graded stakes winners who won three graded stakes races. Lucky Lilac(JPN) was the filly who gave his sire the double graded stakes win including the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies putting him in a very small group of stallions who have managed to produce a two-year-old G1 winner from their first crop. Since Sunday Silence(USA) accomplished it in 1994, and Tanino Gimlet(JPN) in 2006. 2010 Japanese Derby winner Eishin Flash(JPN) came fourth with 12 winners from 80 runners who won 13 races and earning ¥160,545,000(US$1,433,437). His best runner is Ivy Stakes winner Cosmo Ignaz(JPN). Coming in fifth was Novellist(IRE) had ten winners from 63 runners and earnings of ¥151,694,000(US$1,354,410).
