Hokkaido Autumn Sale: Ending on a High Note

17 October, 2017

The boards have been lighting up in sales rings all around the world this year and Japan was not left out of the global buying fervor, with the majority of Japan's major auctions setting new records. That record setting trend extended into the final sale of the Japanese calendar, the Hokkaido Autumn Sale.

Usually a sale that ends up being a buyer's market, this year's Autumn Sale was filled with eager buyers looking to finish filling their orders for the 2017 season. The clearance rate was 75.1%, up 3.3% from last year and the gross was ¥1,754,784,000(US$15,584,227), up 6.3%. Each day the parking lot, including the annex parking lot, filled to the brim with cars and food vendors selling out of lunch early in the afternoon. A sharp autumn breeze didn't hinder the customers from all over Japan for their last chance to buy yearlings domestically.

Sires that made an impact this sale where first season sire, Belshazzar(JPN) who sold 20 lots, averaging ¥2,700,000(US$23,979) and grossed ¥54,000,000(US$479,574). Popular dirt sire South Vigorous(USA) sold nine lots, averaging ¥5,700,000(US$50,622) and grossed ¥51,300,000(US$455,595). Pyro(USA), another popular dirt sire, sold eight lots averaging ¥5,697,000(US$50,595) and grossing ¥45,576,000(US$404,760).

The sale topper was lot 354, a bay colt by the freshman sire Henny Hughes(USA) purchased by Fumio Takahashi for ¥21,600,000(US$191,829). Over all 12 horses went over the ¥10,000,000 mark over the three days. Two of them, including the topper, was by Henny Hughes(USA) and three others were by Lord Kanaloa(JPN). Lord Kanaloa(JPN) made sparks fly in many of the sales this summer as his first crop continue to perform well on the track, and from the three of his progeny that sold this week they averaged ¥14,580,000(US$129,485), the highest of the sale, and grossed ¥43,740,000(US$388,455).

Even as the last hammer fell some buyers already were about needing to attend the training sales in Japan next May, and the hotels for the sales next year are already fully booked. The desire for racehorses is alive and well in Japan and looks like it will continue on into the 2018 sales season.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in the sales this year. We hope to see you again next year for the Hokkaido Training Sale in Late May, Hokkaido Selection Sale in Mid-July, Hokkaido Summer Sale in Late August, and the Hokkaido Autumn Sale in Early October. Next year we will have the first crop yearlings of Japan Cup winner Epiphaneia(JPN), Japan Derby winner Kizuna(JPN), six time G1 winner Gold Ship(JPN), and 36 other stallions.
