Final Yearling Sale of 2017: Hokkaido Autumn Sale

21 September, 2017

The final yearling sale in Japan, the Hokkaido Autumn Sale will be held on October 2nd through the 4th at the Hokkaido Sales Pavilion in Shizunai. There are 587 yearlings catalogued for the first time with an additional 154 lots added to Wednesday's session coming from sales earlier this summer.

Last year's Hokkaido Autumn Sale closed strongly with a 71.8% clearance rate up significantly from the 65.9% rate in 2015. The clearance rate has been steadily on the rise for the past decade and could see another increase this year after a very competitive summer time sale season.

While this sale is usually a sale on type more than black type, there are some notable pedigrees in catalogued this year.

Lot 449 is bay colt by King Kamehameha(JPN), the sire of this year's Japanese Derby winner Rey de Oro(JPN) being sold by Shadai Farm. The colt is out of Cativa(USA) who won the G2 Barbara Fritchie Handicap(USA) back in 2005 and has produced seven foals of racing age, with four winners from four runners.

Lot 496 is a chestnut filly by Cape Blanco(IRE) and the second foal of G2 winner Sound of Heart(JPN), a solid race mare. During her three seasons on the track aside from her G2 Hanshin Himba Stakes win, she also ran 3rd in the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies and 4th in the Japanese 1000 Guineas. She won the Listed Turquoise Stakes which has since been upgraded to a G3.

Lot 344 is a dark bay full sister to three time G2 winner Desperado(JPN) by proven sire Neo Universe(JPN). The mare, Meine Noel(JPN) by Tony Bin(IRE) has three notable runners to her name winning a combined 15 races in the JRA and a further eight in the NAR.

Lot 569 is a bay colt by Screen Hero(JPN) and out of the Sadler's Wells(USA) mare Ticket to Dance(IRE). He is a half brother to Civil War(JPN) who was a five time graded stakes winner and ran second and third in the JpnI JBC Classic during his career. Civil War(JPN) has since entered stud and several yearlings from his first crop are also available in this sale.

Every year Darley Japan sells a handful of yearlings that prove quite popular with buyers. This year they are dispersing 18 yearlings, seven colts and 11 fillies.

It is important to note for any potential buyer from abroad that the JBBA offers a bonus program for Japanese-bred winners in foreign countries purchased at these sales. Please contact the JBBA's office for further details on this program in your country.
