The annual Hokkaido Selection Sale will be held on July 18th this summer at the Hokkaido Sales Pavilion in Shizunai, Hokkaido. Graduates in recent years have gone on to perform at the highest levels in Japan. Ten-time G1 winner Hokko Tarumae sold for 15.7 million yen before going on to earn over 1 billion yen on the track. The three-time champion dirt horse entered stud this spring and had a full book for his first season. Last year's G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen winner Big Arthur sold for 11 million yen and has to date earned 299 million yen. He will be seeking his second G1 victory this fall in the G1 Sprinters Stakes. There have been sixteen other graded stakes winners from this sale in the past ten years, with the quality of stock increasing each year.
This year 234 yearlings have been carefully selected from all over Japan's Thoroughbred breeding heartland. There are many of Japan's top stallions represented in this year's catalog. King Kamehameha, the sire of this year's Japanese Derby winner, is always very popular and with a limited book a rare find at public auction, has one lot. Another wildly popular stallion, with winners all over the world, Heart's Cry also has one lot. Kurofune, with seven lots, has had a great year in his old age, with a G1 winner this spring. The late Gold Allure, sire of the G1 February Stakes winner this year has eight lots. Dubai World Cup and Arima Kinen winner Victoire Pisa, who has had G1 success in Japan and has a G1 hopeful in Germany, is represented by seven lots. Screen Hero, the sire of Maurice who passed through two Hokkaido sales rings before winning 6 G1 titles, has three lots. The full brother to Deep Impact and the sire of Horse of the year Kitasan Black, Black Tide has 13 lots listed this year.
Several freshman sires have debuted with good results in the JRA in the past few weeks as two-year-old racing starts in Japan. Four sires who have had a debut winner in the past month: Eishin Flash with ten lots; Novellist with five lots; Henny Hughes with five lots; Lord Kanaloa with 15 lots. Two times Horse of the Year Orfevre, who has only had one starter to date, has eight lots.
Several first crop sires will be making their debut at the Hokkaido Sale including Cape Blanco, a son of the legendary Galileo, has 13 lots; Longines World's Best Racehorse of 2014, Just a Way has 8 lots, and Dunkirk, who was Leading Freshman Sire in North America in 2013, has 6 lots.
The dams of these 234 yearlings also come from deep pedigrees that are related to some of the top racehorses in Japan. Just a few of the well-established relations are as follows: Deep Impact, Stay Gold, Gold Allure, Air Groove, Victoire Pisa, To the Victory, Eishin Preston, Vega, Special Week, Cesario, and much more. The pedigrees are quite active with new additions of G1 winners like Gold Ship, Admire Lead, Snow Dragon, Seiun Kosei, Whale Capture, Duramente, Deep Brilliante, and more. In total there are 12 blacktype winning mares and 15 blacktype placed mares. There are 21 blacktype winner producers and 13 blacktype placed producers.
The exhibition will be held at the Sales Pavilion in Shizunai on Monday, July 17th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Hokkaido Selection Sale will begin at 10:00 am on Tuesday, July 18th.
