Japanese Horse Wins Most Expensive Race in Hong Kong

28 December, 2015

The Longines Hong Kong International Races featuring four highly coveted international G1 races were held at Sha Tin Racecourse on December 13, 2015 (Sun), with Japanese horses performing exceptionally well, earning victories in 2 of the 4 races.
Japanese mile champion MAURICE (4yo, Screen Hero - Mejiro Frances, by Carnegie) showed excellent acceleration in the final stretch of the Longines Hong Kong Mile (1,600m, Turf, Total Prizemoney HK$23,000,000) to overcome local hero ABLE FRIEND and win the second richest race in Hong Kong. MAURICE was first sold as a yearling at the 2012 Hokkaido Summer Sale for approximately US$13,000 and was then sold at the Hokkaido Training Sale the next year for US$86,620. He has now won three G1 races and earnings of over US$4,300,000.
In the feature event of the day, the Longines Hong Kong Cup (2,000m, Turf, Total Prizemoney HK$25,000,000), Japan's A SHIN HIKARI (4yo, Deep Impact - Catalina, by Storm Cat) took the lead about 100m into the race and thereafter remained in front to win by a one length margin. NUOVO RECORD, another Japanese contender, came speeding down the inside stretch to finish second, making it a one-two finish for Japanese horses in Hong Kong's most expensive race. A SHIN HIKARI is the second Japanese horse to win the Hong Kong Cup after AGNES DIGITAL in 2001.
The last Japanese horse to win an international G1 race in Hong Kong was LORD KANALOA, who won the Hong Kong Sprint twice, in 2012 and 2013. To date, Japanese horses have won a total of 11 G1 races in Hong Kong.
