Japanese Horse Scores Emphatic Win in Hong Kong Sprint (G1)

11 December, 2012

HON-12-1.jpg The Hong Kong International Races that take place in December each year make up the largest racing event in Hong Kong and are a major fixture on the international racing calendar with top racehorses from around the globe gathering in Hong Kong to participate in four G1 races, the Hong Kong Cup, the Hong Kong Mile, the Hong Kong Vase and the Hong Kong Sprint. This year, the races took place on December 9th (Sun) at Sha Tin Racecourse.
In the past, Japanese horses had achieved considerable success in the International Races, having scored one win in the Hong Kong Cup, two wins in the Hong Kong Mile and one win in the Hong Kong Vase, but victory in the Hong Kong Sprint (G1, Turf 1200m, Prizemoney HK$15,000,000 or approx. S$2,400,000) had eluded horses from Japan until now. This year, LORD KANALOA(JPN) became the first Japanese horse to win the G1 sprint race in Hong Kong.
Maintaining a good position around third or fourth for most of the race after making a good start, LORD KANALOA showed excellent acceleration in the final stretch and won comfortably by a 2.5 length margin. The win was a particularly meaningful one as LORD KANALOA demonstrated the speed and sprinting potential of Japanese-bred horses by defeating high-class sprinters from Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia in a top international race.
Another Japanese runner, JAGUAR MAIL(JPN), who ran in the Hong Kong Vase (G1, Turf 2400m), put up a respectable effort to finish 2nd by a short head.
